Reception | Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC
600 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL, USA
Friday, December 8, 9 am - 11:30 am
Join the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC for a Caribbean-inspired brunch and walk-through of the exhibition led by artist and architect Germane Barnes. Barnes will discuss the inspiration behind his site specific MOAD Pavilion, 'Germane Barnes: Ukhamba' and will provide insight into the design of the structure. A special live performance by a Junkanoo band and dancers will celebrate the Pavilion.
Named after a type of African woven wood basket, Ukhamba, by artist and architect Germane Barnes is a ten-foot-tall circular structure with four arched entrances, built of curved wooden elements stacked in horizontal layers. Its construction invites visitors to walk inside and congregate but allows the surrounding plaza and urban landscape to remain visible through the structure. Inspired by Barnes’s time working abroad in South Africa, as well as in Miami, Ukhamba reflects on the misappropriation of influences from the African continent by Western architecture. It comprises a pavilion that appears part basket, part traditional breeze wall found in tropical climates.
'Germane Barnes: Ukhamba' is the second in a series of annual commissioned MOAD Pavilions, curated by Isabela Villanueva, MOAD Consulting Curator.
RSVP essential to Jennifer Weinberg, jweinbe1@mdc.edu.

This year’s rehanging of the collection is titled “A Train of Thoughts”, focusing on two core subgroups of the collection’s holdings: figuration and conceptualism. The exhibition highlights a collecting history that has favored a taste for the abject and hyperbolic figurative image, in tandem with the self-reflexive, institutional critique of art based on ideas– a seemingly incompatible pair that yields unexpected dialogues.
